Two – an intense fear of change

I saw a saying once – probably a meme – that said, ‘You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one.’ Not only did I keep re-reading the last chapter, but I refused to even let go of the pages!

People in my life were moving on in all sorts of ways. That’s a normal part of getting older. Some of the couples were breaking up, some were moving away, some were changing jobs, and some were making new friends. I told them all I was happy for them. I know I would have been a lot more supportive if I had been well.

It felt like the world I knew was disappearing in a tornado. As if it was picking up houses and people as it went, spinning them around me. Everything was moving way too fast, and I was standing dead still.

I replayed old memories constantly. It was upsetting that things had changed since then. I tried to see people as much as I used to, and resented people when they couldn’t see me. Their lives were improving and it was exciting for them. But my life wasn’t.
